The Philips HS8420 is a collaboration between Philips, one of the major manufacturers of electric razors and Nivea one of the top dogs in the men’s skin care industry. This is certainly a mutually beneficial relationship but there is more to this tie-in than just gimmickry. Let’s see how this relationship works, and how the Philips HS8420 performs under scrutiny:

The Philips HS8420 is Tougher than it Looks

The first thing you notice about the Philips HS8420 is the shave head and the placement of the three rotary blades upon It; whereas many Philips razors have the head fixed firmly to the body, the Philips HS8420 has a very narrow neck and small shave head which consists of the three rotary blades and nothing surrounding them. This makes the shave head look quite flimsy but on closer inspection it is tougher than it looks. Other than that the main body of the Philips HS8420 is a small and sleek affair with silver and blue being the main colours.

What’s with the Nivea Tie-In?

Where Nivea comes into this is a unique system whereby Nivea shaving conditioner is pumped into the handle of the Philips HS8420 from a small container which is then dispensed through the centres of the rotary blades onto your skin by pressing a button above the main one-off switch. This is designed to guard your skin against irritation whilst moisturising your skin as it goes. The Philips HS8420 can also be used without the Nivea moisturiser and still works very well, however the addition of this Nivea product does improve overall comfort and smoothness of the shaving process.

The Philips HS8420 is completely waterproof to such an extent it can be taken into the shower with you. With no cleaning dock, it is important to rinse the blades clean after every use so as to prevent a build-up of leftover moisturiser.

Other Technology of the Philips HS8420

As well as the addition of Nivea moisturiser, the Philips HS8420 also uses a Flex Tracker System and Stretch and Lift Rings to improve the shave. The Flex Tracker System is the name given by Philips to the movement of the shave head upon your face; the rotary blades being able to pivot and tilt forward and back to match the natural curves and shape of your face in order to catch more hairs. Meanwhile, the Stretch and Lift Rings operate by stretching your skin is slightly in order to let the roots lift up for a closer shave. The dual blades of the rings operate in tandem to first lift the stubble and then cut it smoothly.

One extremely standard feature missing from the Philips HS8420 is the pop-up trimmer. A pop-up trimmer for sideburns and moustache/goatee trimming etc. is so common a feature of electric razors nowadays so as to only receive a cursory mention most of the time. With this feature completely missing, I assume Philips would like you to buy a separate trimmer for this purpose.

The bottom line with the Philips HS8420 is that it is a very, very good shaver. Even as a dry shaver it works very well indeed but the addition of the Nivea moisturising system and being completely at home as a wet shaver also, I believe most users will be delighted with their shave. As a bonus, the Philips HS8420 is not even a particularly expensive product, and the media refills will not break the bank either.
