A predecessor to the 5-bladed ES-LV81 and ES-LV61, the Panasonic ES-LF71 was once the latest and greatest in Panasonic’s shaver collection but I guess things are evolving too quickly for any shaver to take that stage for too long. That aside and for what it’s worth, the ES-LF71 still deserves a solid review as it is a great shaver that gets close to the skin without tugging at it or leaving a rash in its trail.

First and foremost, the shave quality

Coming equipped with 4 blades and not 5 is by no means a black mark against the performance of this shaver as these blades are designed to get long, short and hard to reach hairs. One of the foils will catch those longer hairs while the lifting foil will ensure that each flat-lying hair is exposed and cut. The two other finishing foils will get everything else that may be left behind leaving you clean and smooth.
What I like about the ES-LF71 and indeed what I like about most of Panasonic’s newer models, is the fact that it is a wet and dry shaver. This means that you could have a quick once over in the car on the way to the office (admittedly a frequently used option by yours truly) or if you have the time, you can get the shaving gel involved for that extra close shave. The shave quality of both options is excellent, with the wet shave leaving you a little softer and smoother, but not by much if I am honest.
Because the blades are nano-edged (that is Panasonic speak for extremely sharp), you will not need to go over the same spot again and again to achieve that smooth look which I personally find a huge benefit. I have quite thick black stubble so for me to attest to the fact that once is enough is a big deal.

Keeping it clean

As the Panasonic ES-LF71 comes with a nifty cleaning station, keeping your shaver hygienic and fresh is no problem at all. After use, just place it head down into the cleaning station (which doubles up as a charger) and let it work its magic. Panasonic recommend cleaning the shaver after each use but to be honest, this will start adding up as you replace the cleaning fluid every few months. I simply rinse the shaver under the tap with some warm soapy water and use the cleaning station once or twice a week. But of course, that’s up to you.

Battery life

The battery life on the ES-LF71 is really good as a simple 1 hour charge will give you 45 minutes of cordless shaving time which should last you about a week if not more. It also has a quick shave option, for those who forget to put it on charge the night before, as a 5 minute charge will be enough for 1 shave. Nice one!

The pop-up trimmer

No shaver review would be complete without mention of the pop-up trimmer. I have to say that the pop-up trimmer on the ES-LF71 falls into my safe zone as you won’t come out with a patch of skin missing or with a huge red rash on your face. It is pretty good at precision trimming and will not tug while it cuts.

The verdict?

All in all, the Panasonic ES-LF71 is a great shaver and a reliable investment. Its 4 super sharp blades will leave you with a smooth and close shave, even when it comes to the toughest facial hair. The cleaning station is a nice to have and if used regularly, will not only ensure that your blades are hygienic and lubricated, but will also ensure the longevity of the shaver.
When first launched, the ES-LF71 was extremely pricey but as it is no longer the new kid on the block, prices have plummeted considerably making it a great buy.

I have now used the Philips PowerTouch PT730 for just over two weeks and although I had intended to test it for a month, I actually no longer have the patience. Yes, this shaver is on the lower-end of the shaver spectrum so one can’t realistically expect miracles, but for the price you are paying, there are still a few basic things that you need.

Not a close shave

The “cut and lift” technology which is now synonymous with all Philips shavers is of course the underlying mechanism in this shaver but for some reason it just does not work very well in this model. I wanted to give the PT730 a fair chance and thus only used it on day-old growth but even so, it was not so much cutting the hair as it was ironing it flat on my face.

The worst part about this is that it was not only the neck area that this shaver battled with but it was also my cheeks which would usually be the easy bit. No no, there was far too much tugging and pulling involved for me to be left with tufts of unshaven hair and red blotches.

No pop-up trimmer

This shaver does not come with a pop-up trimmer which although is not a deal breaker, seems a little mean of Philips. While I am on the topic, it also does not have a travel pouch – travel pouches come at a bit more of a premium.

Eight hour battery charge

Again, I know this is a bottom of the range shaver but for it to take 8 hours to charge seems ridiculous to me, especially when there are other shavers out there that do a better job in a one hour charge. In addition to this, there is no charging display either – just a power button and a green light that goes orange when a charge is needed.

There are some plus points

On the plus side, the ergonomic design of this shaver makes it both easy and comfortable to hold and to move around your face. It is a solid shaver and is sturdy without being heavy.

Cleaning this shaver is a boon as you simply flip the lid upwards and run under a tap – the water washes all the dry skin and beard hair out in seconds. The PT730 is of course fully waterproof and able to cope with this. The packaging includes a cleaning brush to remove smaller dust particles and hairs that would otherwise be stuck while cleaning under the tap.

Steer clear of this shaver

I really wouldn’t recommend this shaver as it is not value for money and it will abuse your face without shaving your hair. To be quite honest, if you are looking for a cheap, quick fix shaver, avoid the Philips Powertouch PT730 and go for something that will actually do the job.

As you may have gauged from some of my other reviews, I am a dedicated foil shaver kind of guy so when it came to testing the Philips PowerTouch Rotary shavers, one could say that I treated the task with a bit of skepticism. But of course, everything deserves a fair chance so I packed my foil shaver in the drawer to make room for my new friend, the Philips PowerTouch Plus PT860.

Ergonomically designed

The first thing to mention about this shaver is that it was designed with the user in mind which is refreshing. Its ergonomic smooth lines make it easy to hold and maneuver across your face. The ribbed rubber grip means that it will sit firmly in your hand. Although it has a solid, sturdy build, it is by no means heavy or uncomfortable. Philips definitely get an extra point for putting some thought into the design.

The jury’s out on the shave quality

I can’t really comment on the overall quality of the shave because as far as I am concerned, the shave quality falls into two different categories:

If you shave daily and are prepared to continue shaving daily, the PowerTouch Plus PT860 is more than likely just what you are looking for. For day-old growth, this rotary shaver performs very well and gives a very decent close shave. The three independent heads coupled with Philips’ super lift and cut dual blade system are designed to crop that stubble as well as the longer hairs. In addition to this, the three shaving heads are sprung and operate independently of each other, giving the shaver the flexibility to respond to the contours of your face. And respond it does.
If like me, you have slightly thicker hair or even prefer to shave every other day, stay away from the PowerTouch Plus PT860 as it will not cope. The PT860 just lacks oomph when it comes to dealing with those stubborn hairs which generally forces you to go over and over until they have been removed. Ouch! This is about the time that I started getting red patches and a serious case of razor burn which puts me off completely.

Battery life is a big plus

A major strength of the Philips PowerTouch Plus PT860 is its excellent battery life which just seems to keep going. A simple 1-hour charge will give you up to 16 shaves with daily usage which is impressive. This lengthy charge can be attributed to the lithium ion battery which goes the extra mile. It also has a quick charge option whereby a simple 3-minute charge will give you one shave which is a nice option. An LED charging light will also keep you informed of when the shaver needs to be recharged.

My only niggle here is that the charging cable is pathetically thin and fiddly, resembling that of a mobile phone charger (the shaver is cordless). The plug is also designed for shaving sockets which is fine if you have one in your bathroom and a pain in the you know where if you don’t.

Easy maintenance

Cleaning the PowerTouch PT860 is pretty straightforward as one would expect. A simple little switch just under the shaver head flicks the blades section up and allows you to easily empty out the shavings. Once the head is open it is a very simple twist of a central switch to release the 3 heads and take them out for a proper clean with soap and water. Re-assembling everything after cleaning is equally as easy.

Also worth noting….

This shaver comes with a pop-up trimmer which is built into the back. This trimmer is by no means the best on the market but it does the job with minimal tugging and pulling.
Unlike the PT870CC or the PT730, this shaver does not come with a travel pouch which I think is a bit mean. Adding a material pouch to the box of contents costs Philips nothing and yet would add extra value and overall satisfaction to the product.

Final thoughts

This shaver is not everyone’s cup of tea as it can’t cope with more than a day’s growth and the charging cable is a constant gripe. When testing the PowerTouch PT860, I have to admit, I did cheat and use my foil shaver when I was getting ready to go out as the thought of having red patches was a big no no. But on the other hand, if you have very thin facial hair or shave daily, this shaver may be on the list of possibilities as it would be good value for money.

Let’s face it, the Philips AquaTouch AT750 is by no means a state of the art electric shaver and in reality, it pales in comparison to the Panasonic ES-LV61 and ES-LV81. But on the plus side, it does what it says on the tin and has a few built in characteristics and extras that help to improve its overall ranking.

Affordable, Affordable, Affordable

I am not usually one to put price above performance but I have to be honest, the AquaTouch is so very affordable that it would be silly not emphasize this. In fact, it is so affordable that it could be useful as a travel shaver, a spare shaver or even as a dry shaver for those days that you just don’t have time for a wet shave.

Salient Features

The Philips AquaTouch AT750 is very quiet and because it makes use of a modern rotary blade system, it does not vibrate when in use.

As the name would suggest, the AquaTouch AT750 is both a wet and dry shaver so it can be used with shaving foam, in the shower (it is waterproof and cordless) and as a dry shaver. Philips have equipped this shaver with low-friction heads that are ultra thin, allowing for a smooth and easy shave that catches long and short hair. Of course the performance will vary according to thickness and coverage of hair but in my case, the AquaTouch gave a pretty close shave overall. The best shave was with gel (which is usually the case with electric shavers) but all in all I was quite impressed.

The contour response system allows the shaver to easily glide over your jaw and neck, minimizing the threat of skin irritation through unnecessary tugging.

One of the highlights of the Aquatouch is the quick charging times. An hour’s charge would completely charge the battery and offer you a little shy of 55 minutes of cordless power which adds up to about 15 shaves. However, smart power-management technology means the shaver can quick-charge in only 3 minutes for a quick shave.

Extra bits and pieces

Apart from delivering a perfectly respectable shave, the Philips AquaTouch comes with a few extra bits and pieces such as a cleaning brush, protection cap and the most noteworthy of all, the shower hanger pouch. It really is a very simple design, in principle it is a wetsuit for your shaver with a little cord at the top that can be hung around the tap. It is quite clever really as your shaver is always ready and waiting.

Needless to say the AquaTouch comes with a pop-up trimmer which is not the greatest but will get the job done. It does tug a little so go gently.

The verdict

As I am sure you can tell by now, I am not overly enthused over the Philips AquaTouch AT750 but on the same token it really has given me no good reason to dislike it. On the one hand, it delivers a good shave both wet and dry and on the other hand, it is so cost-effective that it would almost be silly not to get one.

I think Braun took a long hard look at some of the crucial flaws in their Series 5 shavers and not only rectified them in the 790CC-3 but actually perfected them. Nice! The Braun 790CC-3 is one of those unique shavers that go above and beyond, offering a shaving experience that just about cuddles your face.

Perfection embodied

The genius of the Braun 790CC-3 lies both in its internal and external design. Externally, its ergonomic shape comfortably sits in your hand, evenly distributing the weight of the shaver. Right, that is box number one ticked.

Internally, the Braun 790CC-3 combines intelligence with a clear understanding of market needs. A trimmer, commonly referred to as a “Power Comb” or formerly labeled “ActiveLift” by Braun, has been added between the OptiFoil foils. This Power Comb moves 130 times per second and works to raise flat and angulated facial hairs in hard to reach areas so that no hair is left behind. The Power Comb is not a new addition to Braun shavers and I am sure you will remember my scathing review of the Power Comb in the 590CC-3, however Braun seem to have got it right in the 790CC-3.

In addition to this, the Braun 790CC-3 features a nifty feature called Sonic Technology which effectively means that the shaver delivers 10,000 micro-vibrations per stroke, massaging your skin as it moves. This in turn allows a smooth and more comfortable shave….goodbye skin irritation. That is box number two ticked!

It goes without saying that this shaver smoothly pivots along the contours of your face but I just wanted to mention it just in case you were wondering.

Shaver settings

The Braun 790CC-3 interestingly comes with three different shaving modes – a feature unique to Series 7 shavers. The settings are “Sensitive”, “Normal” and “Intensive” which Braun says can be adjusted to suit your different facial areas and hair type. My guess is that like me, you will put it on one setting and leave it at that. Admittedly I did play with the different settings when I first got the shaver but the novelty soon wore off and it was soon left on one setting.

Cleaning and maintenance

The Braun 790CC-3 comes with a charging stand that doubles as a cleaning system and shaver charger. Dubbed the “Clean & Renew” system by Braun, the cleaning stand washes the shaver after each shave, using an alcohol-based fluid that sterilizes as well as cleans. This system cleans, charges, lubricates and dries your shaver in 25 seconds. Simples.

Interestingly, Braun have “gadgeted” up the Clean & Renew System by giving it three different modes: short eco, normal or high intensive. I think Braun are just trying to show off here as having three modes seems a little excessive.

Braun recommends using the “Clean & Renew” system after each shave but I don’t think that that is necessary not only because you will need to replace the cartridges sooner rather than later (at approximately £4/cartridge) but because a little hot water with a dab of soap will do the trick too.

That being said, I am still a great believer in the benefits of the Clean & Renew system and tend to use it once a week for the sake of sterilizing my razor and ensuring its longevity.

Battery life

The charging stand also makes charging convenient (for obvious reasons), and it can boost the battery’s charge level to full in 55 minutes. If you are in a hurry and need to go somewhere sooner, a quick 5-minute charge will do the trick for one shave.

Extras

The Braun 790CC-3 comes with a trimmer which is useful for keeping those sideburns and moustache intact. Like the trimmer found on the Braun 590CC-3, this trimmer is brilliant as trimmers go and will do a great job on even the thickest of hair.

The LCD display will keep tabs on your battery, charging times and hygiene of your shaver.

For the travelers amongst us, the 790CC-3 comes with a SmartPlug which has an automatic worldwide voltage adjustment. It adapts to an outlet voltage between 100V and 240V. In addition to this, the shaver comes with a compact travel case.

The verdict

The Braun 790CC-3 easily falls into my top 10 list of awesome electric shavers. In addition to all of the extras and gadgetry, the bottom line is that the shave quality is fantastic. It gently floats across your face, cutting each and every hair in its path.

The top-end price of this shaver has raised many an eyebrow and of course has put many people off. Yes, it is expensive but the quality design coupled with the Clean & Renew system mean that this shaver is an investment and if looked after, will serve you well for many years.

Giving yourself a close, perfect shave every morning shouldn’t have to feel like performing delicate surgery. With a shaver head that pivots on dual axes and a motor that can crank a whopping 14,000 rotations per minute (RPM), the Panasonic ES-LV81 does not fail to deliver a rapid, tender and gentle shave.

Panasonic ES-LV81 versus Panasonic ES-LV61

Although the Panasonic ES-LV81 is the latest from Panasonic’s men’s grooming range, you will soon notice that there is in fact little difference between the ES-LV81 and the slightly (and I mean ever so slightly) older version, the ES-LV61. The five-blade design, pivoting head and wet and dry functionality are all exactly the same between the two shavers.

So why are you paying more for the ES-LV81 I hear you ask? Well, it is simply because this version comes with a charging stand and cleaning station while the ES-LV61 has a self-cleaning mode that you can fire up while holding it under the tap. From a purely aesthetic perspective, theES-LV81 comes in a rather slick black diamond finish and the ES-LV61 comes in an industry standard silver finish… but of course the finish does not affect the shave.

State-of-the-art foil blade technology

I love the flexibility of wet and dry shavers so I really appreciate this function in the Panasonic ES-LV81. But as this is the big daddy of shavers, the shave that it gives you both in the shower and on the run is truly unlike anything you have had before. This is all thanks to the five thin foil blades which although are individually designed to tackle long, short and difficult hair, unite to remove even the most problematic hair.

The head of the shaver pivots in all directions allowing it to glide around the jaw and neck and because of its super fast rotations per minute (14,000 to be exact), it gently cuts the hair as opposed to tugging at it. Goodbye razor burn!

Cleaning is a doddle

There are two options to clean the Panasonic ES-LV81. The first mirrors that of the ES-LV61 as you can merely remove the blade head and rinse it under the tap with a little soap. Then, hold the power button down for 2 seconds to activate the sonic wash mode which thoroughly rinses the shaver.

The second option is unique to the ES-LV81 – a cleaning station! In a nutshell, this cleaning station contains a tap refillable reservoir which is mixed with a concentrated detergent. This easy to use and cost-effective system does everything to ensure that your shaver is clean and well maintained.

Added features

Aside from offering a shave that is second-to-none, the Panasonic ES-LV81 features a simple blue LCD screen that acts as a battery-life indicator to notify you when the shaver needs a charge. This shaver has a 14-day battery life but a quick 5-minute charge will do the trick for one shave.

I guess the only really problem I have with the ES-LV81 is the seemingly inadequate pop-up trimmer. I mean, one can’t help wondering why, when you have gone to such great lengths to ensure the perfect shaving experience, a little bit extra is invested in making the pop-up trimmer that much better. The pop-up trimmer is fine to refine moustaches and sideburns but it will pinch a little.

The ES-LV81 is great to travel with because of its handy carry case and shaver socket as well as the travel button lock which prevents it from accidentally switching on in your bag.

The Verdict?

All in all, with its ergonomic design and intelligent and cutting edge characteristics, the Panasonic ES-LV81 is an impressive shaver ensuring a fantastic wet and dry shave. The large foils make light work of a hard job and although priced at the top end of the scale, this shaver is well worth the money and will be with you for years.

Arguably, the first thing you will notice when opening the box of your newly purchased Panasonic ES-LV61 is its rather large shaving head. Although big, the shaving head is by no means bulky or heavy and is set to accommodate the revolutionary five-blade cutting system which Panasonic promises will give you the best possible shave. In fact there is method in their madness as when in action, the large head actually expands the cutting area and thus spreads the pressure and reduces the friction on the skin. That’s a good start….

No hair is left behind

Although there is an abundance of electric foil shavers out there on the market, the Panasonic ES-LV61 really sets itself apart from its competitors with its fast motor and nano-edged inner blades. Boasting 14,000 RPM, this shaver has got the goods for a great shave. To give you an indication, other shavers currently available on the market have anything between 8000-10,000 RPMs so there is an increased chance of tugging and friction – makes me cringe!

This impressive motor coupled with the five nano-edged inner blades and pivoting head which adjusts to the contours of your face, means that the shaver will glide effortlessly around your jaw line. In some of their adverts, Panasonic say that the five-blade cutting system has a three stage cutting process:

The slit blade cuts the long whiskers
The lift blade lifts flat-lying hairs for a close one-pass shave
The finishing foils catch stubble at the base for a closer shave

Okay, so all of that aside, I can say from experience that the Panasonic ES-LV61 will deliver a great shave. I have used the shaver with gel in the shower and dry on the run and I can say that as one would expect, the wet shave with the gel is that little bit better. Don’t get me wrong, the dry shave was more than satisfactory but the wet shave was perfect.

Break the bank?

The Panasonic ES-LV61 is priced at the top end of the market which does put a lot of people off. But if you treat this as a long-term investment which it certainly is, the shaver suddenly becomes more affordable. It really would not be unreasonable to say that this shaver will be with you for at least four years.

The Panasonic ES-LV61 does come with a 2-year warranty.

Some added utilities

A clear, Liquid Crystal Display screen shows the current battery level, and alerts you to swap the head of the foil and the inner blades. The Lithium-Ion powered battery charges fairly quickly (in an hour to be precise), and gives you 45 minutes of cordless shaving. If you are short of time and cannot afford to charge the battery for 45-minutes, a 5-minute quick charge is enough to deliver one perfect shave.

To clean the shaver, simply take off the head of the foil exposing the inner blades and wash it quickly under the faucet with a dab of liquid soap. It is also effective to simply hold the shaver under a running tap and power it up – the ‘sonic vibration cleaning mode’ will do the rest for you.

Does it live up to its claim?

All in all, the Panasonic ES-LV61 delivers on its promises and will leave no hair behind. The designers behind this shaver obviously put a lot of thought into this as this shaver caters for all of our shaving needs in the most efficient way possible.
The only gripe worth mentioning is the style of the charging lead as it is not a coiled lead that one would usually find with shavers and electric bathroom goods, instead it has a long straight cable that just hangs down. Weird, especially when everything else has been thought of in the design.

Nonetheless, I give the ES-LV61 two thumbs up for a close shave and for an excellent design.

Noise Comparison

So, this may seem a little bit random but if you have never owned an electric shaver before then you might not realise quite how noisy they can be. Now while this doesn’t bother some people, for some people this is a major issue so I thought I’d post this video of a comparsion between the three main brands of shavers.

In this video you can hear the noise made by a Braun, a Panansonic and a Philips shaver. The Braun and Panasonic are both foil shavers so it is not really a surprise that they are louder than the Philips which is a rotary shaver. The models are all a bit older so they are not an accurate reflection of how all shavers from these different brands sound but it is a useful starting point and if noise is an issue for you then you know to keep an eye out for just that when buying your next electric shaver.

I’d be interested in hearing your experiences with different brands and types of shavers. Do you find your shaver to be too noisy? Do you own a silent shaver? Maybe you have a shaver that is extremely noisy but shaves brilliantly. If that is the case then the question might be asked whether the noise is worth the compromise?
